Dear Diary,
Today I read through reader 2 and what was expected of me in task 2a. The main idea I got from this was we are to keep our own journal in order for us to reflect on our daily activities. Then from here we can analyse and develop our initial ideas and reactions on the events and learn much more from it. I can't say I have properly kept a journal before, apart from when I was younger and used to write my 7 year-old self's 'secrets' in the diary I had got for my birthday. Even then the novelty soon wore off and after a few days I would forget or lose interest. I tend to learn visually though so writing a journal (with use of colour, diagrams etc) is probably the best way for me to account my experiences.
I have started my journal writing and already see a running theme in how I write. I tend to simply note down the facts and occasional reactions to events. I am quite a logical person and lists of what happened is naturally what I would write about, beginning with what teacher took class or what role I danced in a performance. I am now going to try and explore the different styles of writing a diary and see if this helps me improve the development of my ideas. Hopefully this will help me to learn more from my entries. Will let you know how I get on! .... :)

Hi Emma
ReplyDelete"...And even then the novelty soon wore off..." I love this! That's exactly how I felt before I started keeping my journal. I quite like it at the moment, the thing I'm finding most difficult is not going back through and editing what I've written. I'm used to writing for an audience both in my personal blog and my professional life when I was principal. I've made the conscious decision not to go back through and edit as I hope it will make my thoughts more real when I go back to them.
I too am now trying to explore the different styles of writing... let's see how we get on!

Hi Megan,
DeleteI too am now trying out all the different styles and seeing which suits and helps me reflect best. It is interesting what you said about not going back and editing. I am actually the opposite as I don't think I edit enough! I have my own writing style (as we all do) and since exploring the new ones it's made me realise I write too many facts. Now I try & go back to add in more of my reactions and feelings so I too, can make my thoughts feel more real when I look back at them. Hopefully I will start to do this naturally and it wont call for an edit button anymore :)

Hi Emma. I was never one to keep a diary until I got to college and thought it was strange but I got used to it so I'm sure you will Aswell. You. Just have to remember its there and not forget about it which I did once then had to try and remember what I did for about 4 weeks before that. Try ask yourself questions for your writing. For example, why did I do that?
ReplyDeleteWhat did I go there? And add the answers to your writing. This is a good way to reflect on the thing ps you have done!
Ruth
Thanks for your tips Ruth, I found them really helpful as often I don't ask myself enough questions so miss out writing about the development of my thoughts. I have kept my journal with me throughout the days so if I think of anything to write I can do straight away... this also seems to make me remember things for later. Do you write your diary entry at the same time every day? I guess having a habit of doing it at night for example can be a good way to keep on top of it :)

ReplyDeleteHa ha I also use to write a little secret diary about what gifts I wanted, what my dreams were, who I loved etc lol but like with you it soon wore off.
ReplyDeleteIt's good that you're all ready making progress by understanding the way in which you write best. I too should think about using colours, maybe even just different coloured pens for different parts of my thinking.
Thank you. Your post helped me think of something new to try. I'll be off to get some different coloured pens. :)
Take care and good luck on the rest of this task.
