I read this article and video today on Elitedaily.com about the "Innovation of Loneliness" and thought it was very fitting to the discussions being had over Reader 1 about both ethics and social media in general. One of the points being how we use social media to advertise ourselves in the best possible light. In our industry this is what we have to do on a daily basis (and especially when applying for jobs) and although in the clip it is primarily talking about our social lives, this isn't always a good thing. I've posted both the video and link below. Let me know your thoughts and comments on it.

Hi Emma
ReplyDeleteFrom about 2minutes 15seconds starting with the questions "What's the problem with having a conversation?" I found this video fascinating. I completely agree that without face-to-face interaction or real time audio conversation we can be whoever we decided we want to be. Wouldn't it be nice if Web 2.0 allowed us to have a self edit button in real life?!
On a separate note, I thought it might be helpful if everyone added the 'subscribe via email' option to their blog? You can find this in the 'layout' section of your blogger clicking on 'add a gadget' (I've put mine above my profile) and then choosing the 'subscribe via email' gadget. I thought this could save us all time as rather than checking everyday to see what's new, we would get an email telling us someone has a new blog topic. Just a thought! I'm going to post this to everyone.
Take care
Megan
Good points for the this topic of social communication and social media - so the self is at the centre but if the self and other people are actually treated as nodes (rather than using nodes as an abstraction) than the self can loose contact and cease to have meaningful conversations. One about the 150 group number? I heard martin Weller say that the optimum number for a MOOC was 100 (which is much lower than most commercial MOOCs). An idea to be picked up in the Part 3 networking topic.
DeleteI think time is a factor - this was mentioned in the clip - but it is fitting it all in that seems difficult. Yes social media might add to this business - but it is certainly necessary to the way we do things today - locally and globally. Self- promotion? Yes but perhaps this mimics a face-to-face reality?
Megan, I agree about the subscription by email gadget so have added one. Thanks for the idea. Also Paula mentioned on her blog about using feedly which now helps me see everyones recent posts to keep up to date with (almost like a news feed similar to facebook).
DeletePaula, I will definitely look more into the optimum MOOC group number in the next stage of module 1. I was surprised at how high this was. It states "most humans are just incapable of intimately knowing more than 150 people" although I wondered what they mean by 'intimately knowing' as I don't think I deeply 'know' (and by this I mean I am close with and know a lot about their personalities & life) more than 30 people, maybe even less.
Fitting everything into time is a big factor and is often a valid reason but sometimes I think i may be used an excuse? I think self- promotion does mimic a face-to-face reality to an extent, although it is used to optimise this reality and I think in some cases it can distort it.
*it may be used as an excuse.
DeleteHave been thinking of examples on distortion of social media. I attended an audition where people had emailed portfolio photos (also posted them on network dance for auditions) despite them being below the height minimum. The director cut them straight away as they had looked taller in their photos than they were in real life. A face to face meeting wouldn't give such distortion.
DeleteHi Emma
ReplyDeleteI'm using both the email subscribe and an RSS bot, but will look at this feedly thing!
Take care
Megan
